Impact of Systems-based Practice Changes on Patient Safety in the Ambulatory Setting
As of 2013 there are over 5000 Ambulatory Surgery Centers in the US. Data from the AHA shows a growing trend in the number of outpatient surgeries. Numerous advances in both surgical techniques and anesthesia have led to a lot of procedures moving to the ambulatory or office-based setting. This panel will discuss current literature related to patient safety in the ambulatory setting; evaluate a few systems based practice strategies for improving patient safety, identify patients that are better served in the hospital setting and discuss benchmarking and meaningful use of data in the ambulatory setting.
